April is National Poetry Month, and it has arrived at a time of vast uncertainty during the new coronavirus pandemic.

The venues that would have hosted the poetry slams, readings and gatherings in honor of one of the world's largest literary celebrations have closed.

But in spite of closures and social distancing guidelines, National Poetry Month can bring people together from the safety of their living rooms. Many poetry-themed events have moved to online platforms that mimic the real-life experience of poetry slams and readings.

Phoenix poet laureate Rosemarie Dombrowski will host the 'Phoenix Poetry Series: National Poetry Month 2020' online via Zoom from 7 to 9 p.m. Fridays in April.

Each week, four local literary organizations will present up to five readers each. There will also be open mic time for virtual attendees to share their work.

As co-founder of the Phoenix Poetry Series that ran from 2008 to 2019, Dombrowski decided to resurrect the reading series in a digital format to help bring the community together during National Poetry Month.

'A sense of still sharing space'

Before coronavirus closures swept the nation, Dombrowski was planning the first Phoenix Poetry Walk: a 'carnivalesque' festival of poetry-inspired events pouring out into the streets of Grand Avenue. She envisioned it as an annual event.

But before the festival was announced, coronavirus concerns shut it down. Dombrowski plans to start the festival next year, and in its place, she's bringing the series she helped run for 11 years to an online audience.

'In my mind, it was like the dream festival. What I'm doing now is not quite the dream festival, but virtual face-to-face time gives us a sense of still sharing space because we get to see other people's reactions,' Dombrowski said. 'We get to talk in real time and I think that's always been really important to the poetry community.'

As a principal lecturer of English on Arizona State University's downtown Phoenix campus, Dombrowski is familiar with virtual platforms after shifting to teaching her classes online.

'I was hoping that the poetry community would be at least a little bit excited about the potential for some visual and auditory interaction with one another,' Dombrowski said. 'And it seems like they were, because within 24 hours of me asking, all the slots were full.'

'It's just different and that's OK'

Other poetry-themed celebrations are making the transition online as well, including the weekly Phoenix Poetry Slam facilitated by Lawn Gnome Publishing, a used-book store and small Phoenix-based publisher.

For over a year, the competition has taken place Thursday nights at The Lost Leaf in downtown Phoenix. Now the venue is closed indefinitely, so Aaron Hopkins-Johnson, founder and owner of Lawn Gnome Publishing, is bringing poetry to slammers' homes.

Every Thursday at 8 p.m., Hopkins-Johnson will host an Instagram Live session that imitates the dynamics of a live poetry slam: Eight poets will perform; virtual audience members will score the poets and narrow down the top three. After the top three present new material, viewers choose that week's winner.

'Essentially, I'm inviting competitors into the hour-long stream so that they can perform their poem. Then we have a software that takes all the comments, and it can search for scores and then give an average to each poet,' Hopkins-Johnson said. 'Instagram Live allowed for us to be able to 'pass the mic.'

Hopkins-Johnson has run the Phoenix Poetry Slam at various venues throughout the Valley since 2012. Now he is experimenting with how to celebrate his craft virtually.

'The thing about a poetry slam is it has freedom of style, choice and expression. How we're choosing what's behind us while we're speaking, or what clothes we're wearing or how we adjust the microphone. It's just different, and that's OK,' Hopkins-Johnson said.

Lawn Gnome Publishing planned to open a new location at Fifth and Roosevelt streets downtown, but as a business that runs on revenue from ticket sales, the future is uncertain.

'Only time will tell if we can make it through these times in order to be able to open our doors,' Hopkins-Johnson said.

'A very community-oriented group of artists'

As galleries, coffee shops and public venues remain closed, the poetry community at large is facing the same dilemma.

'Obviously, we are a very community-oriented group of artists. I'm so used to being in public spaces for these events that it most definitely feels like some of that communal aspect is lost,' Dombrowski said. 'But I'm really hoping (the poetry community) is back after this. And as soon as they are, I will do everything I can to get people in their doors again.'

As coronavirus concerns expand, so does the need for comfort. Dombrowski encourages turning to literature for inspiration and solace.

'Most of us, because we're at home all day, we're in a real news loop. And now maybe it's time to stop absorbing so much news and try to process our feelings,' Dombrowski said.

'That's where poetry comes in. Poetry can engage with current events, but it can also take a step back from the news and allow us as the writers to try to understand and process our feelings. For me, poetry is a means to well being right now.'

UPDATE: Gov. Doug Ducey announced he would limit restaurant service and close bars, theaters and gyms in counties with confirmed cases of COVID-19. The directive will take effect upon close of business Friday, March 20.

A growing number of metro Phoenix restaurants including chef Charleen Badman's FnB and Chrysa Robertson's Rancho Pinot, both in Scottsdale, are temporarily closing their doors due to concerns about spreading the new coronavirus, which causes COVID-19.

Robertson announced her plans to close Rancho Pinot on Sunday morning. In a social media post shortly after, Badman and FnB co-owner Pavle Milic announced plans for FnB to offer an 'abbreviated menu' for takeout starting Tuesday, March 17.

The restaurants were among the first in the Valley to voluntarily close their dining rooms to customers, as officials from New York to California forced restaurants and bars to shut down to help control the spread of the virus.

'You have to weigh in the fact that people are coming in and you don't know where they've been or who they've been around,' the James Beard Award-winning chef Charleen Badman told The Arizona Republic on Sunday afternoon.

By Tuesday morning, dozens of Valley restaurants, bars and coffee shops followed suit, closing their dining rooms to customers and in some cases moving to takeout and delivery service only. The growing list includes Upward Projects, a Phoenix-based restaurant group that includes Postino WineCafe, Windsor, Federal Pizza and Churn, among other concepts; chef Silvana Salcido Esparza's Barrio Cafe and Barrio Cafe Gran Reserva; and award-winning barbecue restaurant Little Miss BBQ.

Though Gov. Doug Ducey has yet to force Arizona restaurants or bars to shutter or stop on-site consumption of food and drink, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego announced the city was declaring a state of emergency, forcing the closure of all Phoenix bars and moving Phoenix restaurants to takeout, delivery and drive-thru only starting 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Other Arizona cities including Flagstaff and Tucson have taken similar measures in an attempt to flatten the curve, a term for efforts to spread out the number of coronavirus cases over a longer period.
